Red Madness on Rednesday

Two blog posts in two days?  Wow, talk about being an overachiever. I am loving all of the link parties out there and am finding in increasingly difficult not to participate in my favorites.  Like I said yesterday, it's a good thing I have a stash of pictures on my computer that I haven't shared yet.

I went to an estate sale that I think must have been at a former teachers house because there were so many of these holiday wall cutouts for every single holiday.  These are just a few that I picked up. I don't think they are all that old but Maddie still loves to decorate for all of the holidays so it's always a good idea to have a supply on hand.

I also got a little bag of old cards for a dollar.

I bought the bag for this card in particular.

I bet you would have done the same.  Don't you love his tail?  Sister, I bet you do!

Remember the unadvertised estate sale I mentioned yesterday?  Well, I also picked up this old blow mold and these flour sack dish towels.  I love how they wrapped them in the polka dot ribbon.  Quite the sales technique, don't you think?

But my favorite item from that sale would definitely have to be the Fire King Splash Proof Tulip bowl.  This is the largest bowl in the set and I hope that I can find the other bowls I need to complete it. I don't think that this one is in too bad of shape.  I have seen them way worse and for a lot more money than I paid.  It's probably pretty hard to find the bowls without some sort of fading.  Especially since they are over 50 years old!

I picked up this morning glory jar minus the lid at one of my favorite antique malls.  The two Butterprint refrigerator dishes were in the same booth that Sister got her Pink Gooseberry set in.  They were 30% of an already ridiculously low price so I paid $3.85 apiece for them with their lids.  Not too bad for an antique mall. I already have the full set of the Butterprint refrigerator dishes but like I've said before, it's always a good idea to have backup Pyrex.  Especially when mine actually gets used!

We Are Back!

Whew.  Made it back from Vegas & let me tell you, it was quite a trip.  We didn't get a chance to thrift or antique while there since it was kind of a quick trip.  But that was probably for the best.  In our incoherent state, Sister and I probably had no business being around anything breakable.

Since we were gone all weekend, I don't really have any recent finds to show you. So it's a good thing that I have a stockpile of pictures on my computer from all of my Summer finds.

I found these vintage baby shower invitations at the flea market.  They went straight into my Baby Box for Sister.  I will definitely be using these.  They are too cute not to.

Some more vintage Christmas books for Maddie's collection. Hopefully she lets me borrow them at holiday time for displaying.  Does anybody have any good ideas on how to display old books?

I have been on the hunt for the cast iron cornbread mold and finally found one at a garage sale for much cheaper than I had seen at antique stores. It wasn't something that I was so desperate for that I would pay a crazy amount of money (that is reserved for Pyrex).  So I was happy to find it for $2.  The nut chopper and bowls were from the same sale. 

I collect these state trays and there happen to be two for the state that I live in.  I was excited to find this at an unadvertised estate sale (my favorite kind!).

To give you all an idea as to how far apart Sister and I are from one another, check out this map.  I live 5 minutes outside of Eugene and Sister lives waaaaaaaaay up north in Astoria 4 hours away!  I hate it!

That's it for now.  I have a mountain of laundry to tackle and some animals that are feeling very neglected.  Vegas was fun but now it's back to get back to real life.

Some Very Lucky Finds

Something really strange happened to me on Friday.  I didn't go to one single sale.  Believe me when I say that I wanted to.  There just weren't any that sounded worth my time or gas.  Plus, I had hit that incredible estate sale on Thursday so I definitely found fulfillment there.  So what did I do?  Hit up the thrift stores and let me tell you, I am so happy I did! 

Have you ever left the thrift store in a daze, not believing what you just found?  That happened to me not once but twice on Friday.  The crazy thing is that it wasn't even Pyrex that had my head spinning.  Ready to see what the fuss is all about?

I found this set of Vitrock shakers on the end cap aisle at Goodwill.  I seriously thought I was hallucinating when I spotted them.  Who donates this kind of vintage goodness?  Especially when they can go for a crazy amount of money online?   The crazy thing is that they were priced for $6.99 for the set so whoever priced them knew they were something special.  I guess they just didn't think they were special enough for the display case where they keep the fake Coach & Louis Vuitton bags.

I can't even begin to tell you just how fast I moved across the store when I spotted this at SVDP.  This is the smallest Fire King Red Dots Splash Proof Bowl.  This also just so happens to be one of the two bowls that I needed to complete the set.  Want to hear the best part?  It had a green tag on it.  Can you guess what the 50% off color was last week?  GREEN!!  So for $9.99 this came home with me and joined it's friends.

I should not be surprised at my luck at the thrifts on Friday.  After all, I got some amazing things at the Thursday estate sale.  Want to see a couple more pieces of vintage goodness?

The sale consisted of a two story 122 year old farmhouse, a garage, and three out buildings.  There was stuff spread out everywhere.  I spotted these Aunt Jemima & Uncle Mose shakers in the photos on Craigslist and was extremely shocked when my husband came up to me with them in his hand.  Evidently they were on a high shelf in one of the out buildings.  There was really no rhyme or reason as to where they put stuff.  He was super lucky, I think!  These are actually plastic and were promotional pieces from 1951 that you got when you sent in a box top from Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix along with 25 cents. 

Vintage linens are one thing that I never have to battle for at estate sales.  I'm pretty sure that I am one of the lone collectors in the area.  Why else would this amazing 54 x 72 Wilendur Lobster tablecloth still be there 30 minutes after the sale opened?  There was so much stuff, that I didn't even see this in the pictures online.  Otherwise you can bet I would have been on a frantic search for it once the doors opened.  Evidently this is a pretty rare item.  My husband asked if I was going to sell it.  After asking him if he was #@#%&$ crazy, he figured out that the answer was no.  Smart guy.

On the way to pick up dinner for Pizza Saturday, Maddie and I ran into our favorite antique mall and picked up another blow mold for our ever growing vintage Halloween collection.  Stay tuned for pictures of our decorations!

All in all, not a bad week!  There is still lots more to show but I will save it for another post (or three).

Outdoors, then Vegas!?!

Concussion Hanna here!  First, I want to thank everyone for their well wishes on the blog, I appreciate you were thinking of me and sorry I haven't responded sooner, but life has been so busy!  Between the doctor's order to rest the week before last and then finally getting caught up last week, I've had no time to blog.  I'm headed away to Outdoor school for three nights, which took a lot of extra planning on my part, since 2/3 of my kids (7th and 8th grade) don't get to go.  Tomorrow morning I get to ride a bus for 3 1/2 hours with 40 6th graders and then spend 4 days and 3 nights with them in the outdoors.  I'm excited, but also dreading the long hours.  I'm pretty sure the only thing that is really getting me through it all is that on Friday morning I will see my sister in Vegas, woohooo!!!!

Now, I just want all of you to know, that I have officially confirmed my thrifting problem because I was definitely at the Goodwill when I shouldn't have been (maybe right after my concussion diagnosis.)  I have a few little finds, but will have to save them for a share when I get back from my crazy week of festivities.  Until then, here is something for you to laugh at.  I did manage to pick up an embarrassing Halloween costume at Goodwill for Piper (aka the Skull Crusher.)  This is part of her punishment for the painful last few weeks she created (I'm lying, I would have done this to her anyway.)

Pink, Pink, & More Pink

Yay! It's finally Saturday and Pink Saturday at that!  While the boys are camped out watching college football and Miss Maddie is working on her Perler bead creations, I am taking a break from my Saturday chores to share some pretty pinks with all of you.

I went to an estate sale that had a whole clothes line full of 3' x 5' vintage rugs.  They had a typed out list of what the price of each rug was and of course the one that I was interested in wasn't priced.  Well sometimes that works to my advantage! Instead of the $5-$15 that all of the other rugs were priced, this one was only a dollar!  It's perfect for my laundry room.

With the good sales getting few and far between, I have been frequenting the antique malls and thrift stores a little more.  I got this a pink piece of Made in California pottery and the two Hazel Atlas drinking glasses from my favorite antique mall and the plate from Goodwill.  It is marked that the trim is 18k gold.  Fancy, huh?

Can't pass up Melmac when I find it or cute little orphan shakers. 

Remember the amazing estate sale I told you we went to the other day?  Well here is a little teaser of some of what we found.  I finally found the Pyrex 232 2-quart rectangular baker in pink.  I only need the yellow and I will have the whole set.  I know that I already have a pink ice crusher but did you really expect me to pass up one in turquoise?

Is It Friday Yet?

This week is dragging by.  Maddie brought home her first cold of the year last week and I have been fighting it.  We have had no rain in weeks and 75+ degree temperatures daily for the last month. Two major forest fires have the valley that I live in under a major haze and it is just dusty, and dirty, and blah outside.  I live in Oregon. This is not normal weather for this time of year. 
 
But on the plus side, I went to an incredible estate sale this morning.  It was so good, that my husband had to meet me there because it was definitely going to be a divide and conquer type of event.  I filled up my SUV and the back of his work van and still need to go through it all and process it.  Stay tuned for those exciting finds.  But for now, these will have to do.
 

I got this aqua "Made in USA" marked planter at Goodwill of all places!  I heard from someone that McCoy used to mark some of their pieces this way. Do any of you know if that is true?

I get pretty excited when I come across vintage souvenir coffee mugs.  Especially the ones that I steal out of Sisters garage sale box.  Don't know what in the world she was thinking!

Maddie and I found all of this random Christmas stuff at the strangest estate sale. The house looked like people still lived there and they just let you walk through the whole house and grab whatever you wanted. Nothing was priced and they took any offer they were given.  Maddie offered $2 for all of this and they took it. She loves to make offers.  I send her to do that a lot.  Who is gonna turn down a cute 10 year old girl?

We got this tablecloth at the same sale for 50 cents.  It looks Valentines Day-ish, don't you think?

I've started to acquire a nice little village of vintage Putz houses.  These are all marked Made in Japan and were a quarter apiece at an estate sale I went to last week.

I found these pillowcases at Goodwill on the same day I found the USA pottery planter.  It's pretty rare that I find good linens at the thrift store. I love the poppy pillowcases.  They are definitely my favorite.
 
That's all for now.  I gotta head out the door and get Miss Maddie from school. Then I am going to come home and try and answer the question that I have been asking myself all day:
 
Do I have some wine this evening or NyQuil for my cold?

Pretty Vintage Linens

If you have followed our blog for a while, you are aware that not only am I obsessed with vintage Pyrex, I also love vintage linens.  Like most other vintage goodies, they just don't make them like this anymore.  The beautiful and vibrant patterns are impossible for me to pass up if the price is right.  I often come home from the sales with armloads of beautiful tablecloths and other types of household linens like pillowcases and dish towels.  My husband never quite understood until we were at an antique mall one day and he saw the price on a single tablecloth ($48!) that I had found at an estate sale for 2 bucks.  Now he gets it.

I found these beauties at a thrift shop which is pretty rare.   Most of the linens I find are either from flea markets or garage/estate sales. 

I got this quilt topper from an estate sale.  I am just about the farthest thing from a quilter that you will ever meet so it will just stay as I found it.  I have it over the back of the chair in my bedroom for my cat to lay on.  It's much easier to wash this than the cushions!

I found this amazing laundry bag at the same sale as the quilt top.  The graphics are incredible.

More tablecloths from the sale

I also got this dish towel.  Isn't it cute?  I need to figure out a way to display it in it's full glory.  **SixBalloons wanted to know what the towel said.  It says "Quick Frozen Alaskan Polar Bear.  Recipe: Cut hole in ice large enough to fit bear. Sprinkle large peas around edge of ice hole.  While bear is taking a pea, kick him in the ice hole.  Remove frozen bear-garnish with ice worms-serves six hundred and 31". HA!

So this has been a pretty good summer for tablecloths!  This is only some of my collection.  I like to display them in these baskets in my room.  And yes, I actually do use them.  Every table surface and dresser top in my house has some sort of vintage linen on it.  I still have a good sized stack to soak and hang to dry before the weather changes!
