Up The River

I'm not a huge fan of community wide garage sales.  There is either a ton of kids stuff or people put out the stuff that they weren't able to sell last year.  Last weekend I let my husband talk me into going to the small community wide sale up the road from us along the river.  He had gone years prior and said there there was lots of great stuff.  I relented since I didn't have anything better to do and it was just 5 minutes up the road.

The sale was on one small side street and then on the two roads along either side of the river.  The main sales were on the side street and they were a MAJOR bust!  Just like I thought.  Tons of kids stuff and crap.  So we decided to try our luck on the side roads.

At the first stop, I found the perfect wall shelf for Maddy's room.  It didn't even need anything done to it.  At the next house, I got another enamelware bowl, a cute little turquoise beaded necklace, and another vintage sprinkler head (a new collection is brewing).  The nice lady gave me the cookbook for free.  The cast iron skillet was my husband's score.  Around here, these go QUICK at garage sales and always are pretty expensive.  He got this for $2.  We were both pretty stoked.
At that same sale, we got an old military first aid kit and an old gas can for our collection.  As we were walking out, we both spotted this basket.  I grabbed it right away and asked the guy how much.  It didn't really matter because I knew that I had to have it.  I have been looking for an old locker basket for a while now.  I have seen them in antique malls for tons of money and have almost bought one.  I'm glad I waited because the guy sold it to me for a dollar!  It doesn't have a number on the front but the name of the person it belonged to.
We got this old ashtray for $2 and eventually it will be re purposed into a planter.  The washing machine was FREE to whomever wanted to haul it off.  I already have one out by our pump house that belonged to my grandparents.  They bought it brand new in 1942 and now we use it as a planter.  This one is now out in the garden with flowers in it too.

And what sales would be complete without a couple of vintage tablecloths.  I love scrolling through eBay and looking at the tons of beautiful tablecloths that are for sale but it is really hard for me to justify bidding on them when I can almost always find them at sales and for CHEAP.  I paid 50 cents apiece for these.
At the last stop I got this awesome water can, two Fiesta latte mugs (which from the car I thought were vintage pottery) and another wood handled pastry cutter for my ever growing collection.

So these community sales ended up not being so bad.  I think it may have something to do with them being in a more country setting rather than a suburb.  I may have to go back next year and try my luck again.

Have a great weekend!

  1. We thrifters get good at discerning which houses have crap and/or baby stuff and which locations have treasures. You found great treasures!
