An Estate Sale To Remember Holiday Edition

Hi Everyone!

I'm actually sitting at Sister's kitchen table in Astoria right now as I write this blog.  Miss Maddie, Bullet, and I headed here for the weekend while Brian & Alex are in Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Basketball Tournament.  Normally, I would be really jealous that they were in Vegas without me but I'm with my Sister which is where I'd much rather be!

We had a long day of thrifting.  I didn't get too much but Sister went a little wild.  I'm sure she will be sharing all of her treasures with you soon.  But for now, I am going to show you all of my fabulous holiday finds from "An Estate Sale To Remember".

The two top honeycombs were a quarter apiece and the gaggle of turkeys were in the original packaging for 50 cents.

This is a reproduction but I have an original paper mache pumpkin that this will look really good
with.

So what do you do when you find 5 Empire candy buckets for 50 cents apiece?  You buy them all obviously!

I bought this book because it was from the year I was born, 1976.

I bought this bag of Easter stuff just to get the Millinery flower egg.

I'm not really sure if this pillow is old or a reproduction but I still had to have it.

Old squeaky toys for a quarter apiece.  Maddie thinks they are dog toys.  You be the judge!

These old plastic candy containers look like they could use some Magpie Ethel Magic!

Gurley candles in a 50 cent grab bag.  Does anyone know the age of the flat snowmen?  They are marked Gurley but I have never seen them before.

Love this bag of bells, especially the old pink one.

This random bag of ornaments was 50 cents and good for wreath making.

I remember when I was decorating my tree last year and I was hanging my lone pine cone ornament I was thinking I needed to find more.  I think these will do the job!

I found a random bag of birds.  I LOVE the glittery goose.

No vintage holiday haul is complete without a couple of spun heads in glittery slippers!

I actually picked up a bag of these carolers and bells at SVDP last holiday season.  I was happy to find more to add to the bunch.

I really don't remember picking these up but they ended up in my bag.  I remember my Grandma Gloria used to have the bubble lights on her tree.  Now they are considered a major fire hazard!

These old stockings have the original Woolworths price tags on them!  I think the tags say 5 cents apiece.  I paid a dime apiece. 

I got all of this stuff in another 50 cent grab bag.  I am pretty sure that I will never come across these kind of prices again.

Who am I to pass up Golden Books, especially when they are a dime apiece?

I am so loving this bird feeder.  What an amazing way to repurpose vintage dishes!  The top part is a snack sever tray, then a canning jar, then a chicken feeder, then a dessert dish.  Add a cute little Pixie on the top and you are good to go!  Sister and I have big plans to try and make our own this Summer.

Sometimes You Get Lucky

There was an estate sale listed recently on Craigslist titled "An Estate Sale To Remember".  The ad ran for a few weeks leading up to the actual sale.  I knew that I wasn't going to miss this sale because it was part of the estate of one of the former sellers at one of my all time favorite antique malls that recently closed due to the owner retiring.  After reading the description of everything that was for sale,  I figured that every single dealer and collector within 100 miles would be there so I was a little stressed out about not getting there early enough.
 
There was no reason for me to be stressed.
 
I got there about 15 minutes before it opened and was one of 3 people waiting.  Believe me, I wasn't complaining but I was definitely baffled as to where everyone was. The sale was a little out of the way on the outskirts of a neighboring town but definitely not hard or long to get to.  Maybe there were other sales that were better but I didn't know of any.  The only thing that made sense to me was that maybe people thought that since it was a former dealers sale, that the prices would be over the top.  I know that the thought had definitely crossed my mind.
 
If this is what everybody was thinking, they were wrong.  Dead wrong.

An array of pillow cases and dish towels for a quarter apiece.  These all got a good soaking in Oxy Clean and are bright as new!

I got Maddie some Golden Books that she didn't already have. They were 10 cents apiece!

This is only half of the haul. This sale was also full of vintage holiday and you can bet I came home with a good amount of it.  Stay tuned!

A Few Fabulous Finds

Happy Saturday!
I've been so jealous of all of Sister's finds and it is torture when you get text messages during work that say things like, "Butterprint 401 and 402 at SVDP."  So each day if I have time I've been heading to my Goodwill that for being in such a small community I feel like has a pretty good turnover.  I've found a few things, so here we go! 

 I picked up a $1.99 grab bag of Easter goodies.  These are my first Beistle honeycomb decorations.  There was also some flowered ribben, a few little ornaments, and a velvety rabbit to craft with.

It took me like 20 minutes even though the directions on this little guy were really clear, but I finally got the honeycombs open.  Isn't she sweet?

I wanted to get Sister this donkey, but $12.99, really?  I guess sometimes donkeys do get left behind.

6 unopened packages of wrapping paper.  5 of them are Strawberry Shortcake and I'm pretty sure they are scented because they were sitting next to me when I was writing this and I swear I smelled something sweet.  The other is clown paper.  Clowns usually freak me out.  This is the first time I found clowns to be cute.

I also found 2 Walt Disney books.  These originally came in a box set of 4, so I really need to find the other two!

But here is my best find of all!  I think someone out there was feeling sorry for me having to listen to all of Sister's beautiful Pyrex finds.  Yes ladies and gentlemen, that is a pink 403 mixing bowl.  That is 2 down and 2 to go for me on this set.  And of course we all know, you can never have too many refrigerator dish lids.I hope I keep getting lucky, even if the finds are few and far between.  Good luck to you guys too!

At The Flea & A Bullet Update

For whatever reason, the pickin's were pretty slim at the flea market this weekend.  But I won't complain because my last two trips have yielded some great finds.  I did manage to come home with just the right amount of vintage goodness to make my early morning wake up call worth it.

This is the first piece of pottery that I have found that is a pitcher.  It is a pretty good size and I am imagining it full of flowers and on my dining room table.  I haggled with the lady and she wouldn't budge on the two dollars that I was asking she take off her price.  Then she said "You know what?  You only live once.  Am I really going to hold on to something that you could enjoy for a measly $2?".  That my friends is a dealer after my own heart.

The lady that I bought this from told me that it had been sitting in her basement for the last 25 years and that she was so happy that it was coming home with me. 

These two Fire King Jadite bowls aren't in the best condition but for $4.00 I couldn't pass them up.  They are the perfect size bowls for cat food and water.  Yes, my cat eats out of vintage Fire King bowls. Doesn't yours?

Last year at the flea market, I bought two of these Hazel Atlas bowls but in the larger cereal bowl size.  These are the same size as the Jadite bowls above but will not be used for cat food.  Cat food in perfect and beautiful Hazel Atlas?  That's just crazy!

 

There is a definite theme of things that I buy at the flea market every week.  Vintage cookbooks always manage to come home with me.  Maddie & I decided that once a week, we are going to choose something out of one of our many old cookbooks to make.  It will be a new feature on our blog!

No Pyrex at the flea market this week but I'm okay with that after the score from last time.  However, there is another Pyrex hunter on the loose!  I noticed that every piece of Pyrex that I passed on was gone the next time I made my rounds through.  I need to find out who this person is so that I can keep my eye on them!

So Bullet will be 4 months old on Saturday. He is in that awkward teenager puppy stage where he thinks he is a big dog but still gets his feelings hurt if the older dogs are too rough with him.  He weighs 42 pounds and I think I have a monster on my hands.

I need to figure out how to get the glare out of his eyes in photos.  I'm still hoping that the rest of him manages to catch up with his giant feet.

Lots to Share!

It was a very busy week for me last week in regards to treasure finding.  I got some great stuff that will take me a few separate posts to share with all of you but you won't find me complaining!  I haven't left a thrift store empty handed the last several times I've gone and I went to my first great estate sale of the season on Friday. Plus, the flea market is tomorrow morning and if this weeks market is anything like last weeks, I will have even more to show all of you.

This is a quilt that I found at Goodwill.  I am by no means any kind of expert when it comes to quilting but this looks handmade to me.  It is in excellent condition and the square patterns and colors are perfectly shabby for my bedroom.  I wish I could get a better picture for you but it's too big to get all in one frame.

I have been on the hunt for the Betty Crocker Cooky Carnival cookbook ever since seeing it on Erica's blog over at Golden Egg Vintage.  I finally found my own at the anniversary sale at one of the local antique malls.

I also picked up some Swanky Swigs.  It has been a really long time since I have found any.  I only allow myself to have 2 of each otherwise it could become a problem!

 

 

Maddie always like to check out the party supply area at the thrift stores.  She found a bag full of these old noisemakers.

 

 

These cute little Kazoo's were in the bag too.  Not really sure what I am going to do with them.

 

 

We also found a bag of these child size plastic clothespins.  I bet we can get pretty crafty with these.

 

 

It is pretty rare to find old pitchers in the thrift stores and even more rare to find them without the ice lips being chipped!  Sister has the larger version of this pitcher so she may also end up with this one after I foster it for a while. I found the Fire King swirl bowl at the same Goodwill but since I already have 2 in this size, this one will be finding it's way to Sister in Astoria.  I've started her on a new collection! 

 

So I bought the bowl for $1.99.  A couple of weeks before I found this bowl, I was at SVDP and they had this same bowl and the next size smaller in the display case marked $64.99 for the set!  I got so angry about the price gouging that I actually told the person behind the counter that they would NEVER sell these bowls at that price. She proceeded to tell me that I was wrong and that these bowls were "highly collectible". I told her that she could put that price on the Jadeite version and maybe get away with it but not the plain white ones.  She asked me what I thought she should price them at and I told her $24.99 for both and to put a color tag on them that would eventually discount.  The tag that was currently on them is a color that is reserved for "collectibles" and never discounts.  She looked at me like I told her she should just give them away for free and said "Oh no, I could never mark them for that"."  Needless to say, after 3 weeks, they are still there. This is the same SVDP that has blatantly fake Coach bags in the display case. Um sorry but the coach signature logo is a C, not an O.  Ever heard of an Oach bag?  Didn't think so.

 

But I digress!

 

 

This is the first state souvenir glass that I have ever found in a thrift store.  It is for Saratoga Springs, NY and is marked Hazel Atlas.

 

 

I picked up this Friendship 1 1/2 quart casserole at the SVDP closest to my house.  I am really starting to find more and more at this particular store.  I used to not find anything and almost always left empty handed. This is also the same store that gave me a discount when I didn't even ask!

 

 

Two days later, I found the Gooseberry 2 1/2 quart casserole with lid at the same store.  It must have been my week! I have been coveting this particular dish ever since I saw it in a local antique mall where they were asking $50!  I had even been scouring eBay for it and almost bit the bullet a few times.  Patience pays off, blog friends! 

 

Kind of a quiet Saturday night here.  Maybe I should bed down early and get ready for the flea market tomorrow?  Wish me luck!
