Another No School Day, Another Blog

Well, work was cancelled yesterday because of the snow and it is canceled today because of hurricane force winds, so I have to say for once I am thankful that I love on the Oregon Coast!  Yesterday the roads were fine so I went to the 4 thrift stores I have in my area and did pretty well for myself.

One of my most exciting finds are the Cornell White handless mugs.  I didn't know what they were, but they were so heavy duty and unique I had to buy them.  With a little research I found out they were used by the Navy in WWII and are hand-warming mugs.  They are super thick and hearty and go for a great price online, so although I think they are awesome, I am going to sell these.
Sister got a steal of a deal a while back at a garage sale down the street and came out with a few cute pieces of pink depression glass (I forget the pattern!)  I have been determined since then to find some depression glass of my own so that I can start collecting it.  This cute little saucer caught my eye and was in a stack of other pink plates that were definitely not old.  I found it online and it was produced by Jeannette and is called the Holiday Buttons and Bows pattern.  I paid $2 for it and am really excited to start seeking this pattern out!

Well as I sit here and ponder what to do around the house, I wonder, Sister, what kind of thrifting adventures will you have today?

A little craft project for Sister....

So the other weekend when Sister was visiting the coast she bought this eye sore that I claimed I could improve......

Due to my unexpected snow day, I have had a little extra time on my hands.  In the above picture I've rubbed wax on all the mirrors edges.  Next I added 1 coat of paint.

It looked a little spotty so I added one more layer and then sanded off of the wax.  Here is the end result:
Not a bad pick for $8 I would say!  This is going to look great in sister's bedroom and now I can't wait to make another!

Platters!!

So our Sister Adventure had to be postponed due to the totally unpredictable Oregon Winter weather.  Oh well, it does give me a chance to go through all of my thrifting finds from the last couple of days.  I am going to do them in a couple separate posts so that they don't seem to go on, and on, and on.
I found this Homer Laughlin restaurantware platter at St. Vincents yesterday.  Of course the pink and turquoise caught my eye.  $2.00!  Can you spell SCORE?
There is a really cute little antique mall about a 30 minute drive from where I live.  There is one seller there who has tons of super cute vintage kitchen stuff and a huge supply of Pyrex.  Well the lady who was working that day knew that this booth was going to go 20% off in a few days but seeing that I was there now and knowing that I wasn't from the area, she gave it to me that day!  I got some really cute things including this awesome turquoise serving fork and Colorcraft Adagio platter.
I found this English Pyrex JAJ platter at St. Vincents.  It's not normally something that I would have picked up but after reading another blog about these platters, I knew exactly what it was when I walked by.  Of course knowing that it's Pyrex, I had to have it!

On a side note, I have realized just how sick I am when it comes to thrifting.  I had to go to the mall yesterday to pick up a couple of things for my son and all I could think about was how fast I could get out of there and get to Goodwill!  Oh no Sister, what has happened to us?

With a potential 4 day weekend in front of me, The husband and I got out and did some thrifting on Saturday and here are the results.....

We had a great time and found some new spots that we will definitely frequent.  Here are the highlights of the adventure:

Before Christmas I bought the Bambi Junior Deluxe Edition at an antique store because the cover was so endearing and I love the story.  I picked these up at a thrift store for a ridiculously cheaper price and am struggling to decide if I want to keep them or put them on my Etsy site.

You will soon learn that anything to do with birds is of interest to me.  I picked these Federal Glass cups up at the same thrift store as the books and the little shot glass came from the Goodwill here on the coast the other day.

I couldn't wait to post my casserole pick but I want to share it again.  The lid (Crazy quilt) obviously doesn't below with the blue Butterprint, but it was still a great deal and I loved the color.  If you have the book, "Pyrex: The Unauthorized Collector's Guide," you'll notice this lid on the cover, as pointed out by Sister.  As soon as this lid finds it's correct home the Butterprint is going to Sister.  The mugs I think match really well and I've been eyeing at various antique shops for a long time.  I picked them up for $1.25/piece and can't wait to use them during cocktail time!
I found this promotional Gold leaf pyrex at Goodwill and this lid works, although I don't think it is a perfect match.  I get excited when I find anything promotional!
This was Matt's pick of the day (my husband.)  He got this casserole in a holder for $10.  I haven't been able to find this exact holder but I have found others.  This dish is from the 1920s/30s from what I've found and I am curious to see if I can find the holder.  It's a unique piece and more than I would normally pay, but I couldn't pass it up.

We are hoping the snow stops falling and our big thrifting day isn't canceled, but we will have to wait and watch the weather.  If I can't make it to Portland tomorrow, we will have to postpone, but Sister and I definitely are meeting up at the Antique Expo in Clark County next Sunday, stay tuned!

A Cold Day but Worth It!

Let me just start off my saying that I had every intention of being productive around my house today.  But low and behold, sometime during my slumber an ad had been posted on Craigslist for an estate sale that started at 8 am.  So after bribing Miss Maddy with Carl's Jr., we were out the door into the 24 degree morning.  We arrived at the house at 7:45 and Maddy declared that she would wait in the car because anybody who would stand in line for an estate sale in the cold were "dumb". Lucky for me the garage door opened about 2 minutes after I got in line.  Once the three guys ahead of me determined that there were no knives or postcards, they were gone.  Evidently, vintage pottery and glassware just weren't there thing.  Lucky for me it's mine!
None of the items in the sale were priced so I offered $15.00 for all of this.  The lady running the sale countered with $20.00 and I took it.  All of the items with the exception of the tall blue vase in the back are either Haeger or McCoy.  All are in perfect condition too!
I was able to get this set of Libbey Gold Leaf glasses for $3.00.  I have a few of these glasses in random sizes that I've picked up at St. Vincent but none of the juice glass size.  I also found out that these glasses were featured on Mad Men.  I don't watch it but I've heard that they also have Pyrex on it from time to time.  Must not be a bad show!
I have found an abnormal amount of vintage Tang pitchers in the last week.  It's a good thing my family likes Tang!
4 Quart Yellow Butterprint Cinderella Bowl in MINT condition.  Need I say more?

3 days and counting 'till our big Sister Adventure!  I'm so excited!!  Sister is at Goodwill right now so I'm pretty sure we will all be hearing from her soon.......

A mid-week find + our upcoming Sister adventure!

Well, as I quickly notice my sister giving me a run for my money on our new blogging endeavour, I've decided it is time to tell about our upcoming trip.  You know you've been over thrifting an area when you start recognizing items on the shelf from prior visits and the employees at Goodwill start giving you disgusted stares.  So, Sister and I have been talking for a while about expanding our horizons.  We live 4 hours apart, which is more than torture at times, so meeting in the Portland area is a great half way point for us.  We are meeting in Portland Monday afternoon and spending all day Tuesday on an adventure that includes a list of 33 THRIFT STORES!  I'm sure we will find other stops along the way, and this may be too ambitious of a plan, but man are we excited!

I have to say getting to see all Sister's finds over the last week is resulting in serious withdrawals.  I find myself wanting to sneak to my cell phone during class (I'm a middle school science/math teacher) to see what she has found.  I have seriously contemplated taking a detour to just one store on my drive home, but I must stop myself.  Spending my evenings gazing longingly at thrifting blogs only grazes the surface of this itch.  I have to keep telling myself that the weekend is almost here and that I need to be responsible, but I admit it, I'm addicted to thrifting!

The one reprieve I've had from this torture is this adorable snack set my husband brought home to me on Tuesday.  I think Sister and I have created a monster, because after his first Pyrex find over the weekend, he can't stay out of the stores.  He found this 8 piece snack set in its original box and purchased it for $5 at the same shop we got all the Pyrex last week.  I found that it is a Hazel Atlas set from the 1950s.  I'm starting to get more and more attracted to snack sets and this is my favorite so far.   If you look closely there is a spot on the tray to rest a cigarette (not that I would use it, but kind of cute, right?)

Stay tuned for the recap of the trip and I have a few finds from Sisters' visit to the coast that I hope to share this weekend!  Happy Thrifting!
